ノーザンイリノイ大学ジャズピアノ科卒業。デポール大学大学院ジャズ作編曲科修了。ピアノを Willie Pickens、ハモンドオルガンを Tony Monaco、Chris Foreman に師事。11年間アメリカ・シカゴを拠点に、ジャズおよびブルースのハモンドオルガン／ピアノ奏者として演奏活動を行う。

2010年に日本へ帰国後、活動を再開。2013年にはドイツ・ベルリンへ拠点を移し、ヨーロッパを中心に活動。アメリカ、ドイツ、イタリア、チェコ、スロバキア、スウェーデン、ノルウェーなど各国で演奏を行う。2016年より再び日本を拠点に活動している。

2006年に『Midnight Shuffle』、2010年に『Next Time You See Me』をリリース。2015年にはドイツの Mons Records より『Swingin' with the Hammond Organ』を発表し、アメリカ、ヨーロッパ、日本をはじめ各国でディストリビュートされている。

Chicago Blues Festival、Baltimore Blues Festival、Waterfront Blues Festival、Gary Jazz Festival、Chicago Asian Jazz Festival、Eddie Lang Jazz Festival、International Jazz Festival Praha など、アメリカおよびヨーロッパの多数のジャズ／ブルースフェスティバルに、リーダーおよびサポートの両方で出演。アメリカおよびドイツではテレビ出演も経験している。

日本人ハモンドオルガン奏者として、アメリカ、ヨーロッパ、日本を中心にワールドワイドな演奏活動を行う。教育活動としては、2016年より慶應義塾大学にて一般教養科目としてジャズの講義を担当。

新宿春の楽しいジャズ祭り（2016–2018）、仙台ジャズフェスティバル（2016, 2017）、熊本 Street Art-Plex（2015, 2016）、すみだストリートジャズフェスティバル（2016, 2017）、Nuno Jazz Festa（2016, 2017）、あいちトリエンナーレ（2016, 2017）、新宿トラッドジャズフェスティバル（2016–2018）などに出演。
2016年12月には自己のトリオで NHK 横浜の公開生放送に出演。2018年春にライブ録音されたアルバム『Sunny』をリリースし、『Jazz Japan』ほか各種ジャズ専門誌・メディアにて高い評価を受ける。

Biography (English)

Jazz and blues organist, pianist, composer, and arranger. He studied jazz piano with Willie Pickens at Northern Illinois University, earning a Bachelor of Music in Performance (Jazz Studies). He later earned a Master of Music in Jazz Studies (Composition) and a Performance Certificate from DePaul University.

Based in Chicago for eleven years, he was active as a jazz and blues musician, performing with artists including Billy Branch, Eddie C. Campbell, Bo Diddley, Little Arthur Duncan, George Freeman, Phil Guy, Jeff Hamilton, Harold Jones, Bob Lark, RJ Mischo, Joe Moss, Nick Moss, Pinetop Perkins, Tim Ries, Lynwood Slim, Ira Sullivan, Junior Watson, Phil Woods, among many others.

He has appeared at major festivals such as the Chicago Hope Festival, Chicago Blues Festival, Waterfront Blues Festival (Portland, OR), Baltimore Blues Festival, Taste of Chicago, and numerous others. His recordings include Got a New Plan (Nick Moss, Blue Bella Records, 2001) and Movin' Out (Chicago Blues Angels, Blue Bella Records, 2001). He has also appeared on television programs including Fox Chicago Morning News and Speakin' of the Blues.

He studied jazz organ with Tony Monaco and Chris Foreman and leads his own jazz organ trio. He released Midnight Shuffle (2006) and Next Time You See Me (2010) with the trio, and performed at festivals such as Jazz in the Park (Gary, IN) and the Chicago Asian American Jazz Festival.

After returning to Japan in 2010, he was active as both a performer and educator, appearing at major Japanese jazz festivals. In 2013, he relocated to Berlin, Germany, performing throughout Europe and collaborating with musicians including Torsten Goods, Tony Lakatos, Nils Landgren, Magnus Lindgren, Bjørn Solli, Peter Weniger, and Petter Wettre.His album Swingin' with the Hammond Organ / Hal Tsuchida & European Friends was released by Mons Records in 2015.

In December 2015, he returned to Japan to take a teaching position at Keio University and continue his musical activities.

Hal Tsuchida, geboren in Yokohama, Japan, zog im Alter von zwanzig Jahren in die USA, um Jazz- und Bluespianist zu werden. Er studierte Jazzpiano bei Willie Pickens an der Northern Illinois University und erwarb anschließend einen Master of Music in Jazz Studies sowie ein Performance-Zertifikat an der DePaul University in Chicago.

Über elf Jahre hinweg war er in Chicago aktiv und trat in renommierten Blues- und Jazzclubs sowie auf zahlreichen Festivals in den USA auf. Er spielte mit Musikern wie Billy Branch, Sugar Blue, Eddie C. Campbell, Bo Diddley, George Freeman, Phil Guy, Jeff Hamilton, Harold Jones, Nick Moss, Pinetop Perkins, Tim Ries, Lynwood Slim, Ira Sullivan und Phil Woods.

Angeregt durch Jimmy Smiths Album The Cat wechselte er 2005 vom Klavier zur Hammond-Orgel. Zu seinen Mentoren zählen Tony Monaco und Chris Foreman. Sein erstes Album mit dem Orgeltrio, Midnight Shuffle, erschien 2006, gefolgt von Next Time You See Me im Jahr 2010.

Nach mehreren Jahren in Japan zog Hal 2013 nach Berlin, wo er regelmäßig in bekannten Jazzclubs auftrat.
